Fashion’s Night Out NYC/ Childhood Fears vs Adulthood Fascination

Yesterday was the 2nd annual Fashion’s Night Out in NYC. It was incredible… There was so much great energy, style and beauty roaming the streets of one of the fashion capitals of the world. After leaving a few events in lower Manhattan, I saw a group of people sitting on a bench with stilts on. I couldn’t help but to hop out and snap some pictures of them. In the caribbean, there’s a term used to describe these people called Moko Jumbie.
My dad used to use Moko Jumbie’s as a scare tactic to make sure me and my sisters wouldn’t go against his word when we were younger. He would say stuff like, “if you don’t be good, the Moko Jumbie’s are going to come and get you. He would also tell these vivid stories of him being bad as a child and being chased through sugar cane fields in St. Kitts by Moko Jumbie’s. I would wake up in cold sweats thinking of them and imagining them to look like Tim Burton characters. As someone with caribbean heritage, I’m definitely looking forward to carrying this tradition on and scaring my children with the thought of these beings. It’s something about a 12 foot tall person that will never be friendly or inviting to a kid. As we get older most fears turn into fascination.
